Team Aqua and Team Magma’s nefarious rule has thrown the entire region into disarray. A noble quest to become the Hoenn Champion and defeat these two evil organizations, restoring the long-lost peace to this once-serene area, is laid out before you as you set out on your adventure after getting your first Pokemon from the revered Professor Birch.

You are not, thankfully, completely alone in this journey. Steven, the current Hoenn Champion, feels the same way you do about doing what’s right, and he’s willing to help you out in your quest by imparting his extensive Pokemon expertise.
A WORLD IN PERIL: GROUDON, KYOGRE, AND TEAM AQUA-MAGMA
However, disaster is on the horizon as you progress deeper into Hoenn’s interior. Extreme weather patterns result from the wrath of the gods of the land and sea, Groudon and Kyogre, respectively. The entire survival of the region is in jeopardy due to devastating floods, ferocious storms, and searing heatwaves. Team Aqua and Team Magma are responsible for this imminent disaster.
RAYQUAZA’S QUEST FOR BALANCE
In the middle of this chaos, Rayquaza, the God of the Sky, steps forth as the savior, charged with ending this elemental struggle and restoring equilibrium to the world. As you and Steven work toward your mutual goal of becoming the Hoenn Champion, you’ll eventually face off in a fight of epic proportions.
THE HOENN CHAMPIONSHIP SHOWDOWN
At the same time, a tough trainer named Ash Ketchum has won the title of Champion in both the Kanto Region and the Johto Region. He was determined to defeat the evil Team Rocket and its mysterious commander, Giovanni, and succeeded. The secretive group, however, appears to have faded into obscurity.
THE MYSTERIOUS RETURN OF TEAM ROCKET AND A NEW POKEMON MYSTERY
After two years, Professors Birch of Hoenn and Oak of Kanto decided to work together, using their resources to discover uncharted areas of the Pokemon world. They band together to investigate a mysterious Pokemon spotted in the Orange Islands, which, in the wrong hands, may plunge the entire world into darkness.
