When Mario finds out that Princess Peach Toadstool has been abducted by the nefarious King Koopa Bowser, he is on vacation in Dinosaur Land. Mario immediately sets out to rescue the princess. When Mario begins his hunt for Peach, he comes across a massive egg that has a dinosaur named Yoshi in the process of hatching out of it. Yoshi reveals to Mario that the minions of Bowser have encased his fellow dinosaurs in eggs and are holding them captive. The fearless plumber must journey to their castles, free the dinosaurs, and ultimately face King Koopa himself in order to coerce him into releasing the princess.
The platformer game Super Mario World is a sequel to the jumping-and-running game Super Mario Bros. 3, and it was released in 1992. The gameplay is quite similar to that of the previous iterations, and it consists of fast-paced platforming through (mainly) side-view levels that are filled by a variety of foes and traps, all of which must be accomplished within the allotted amount of time. Mario gets access to all of his standard power-ups, such as the Super Mushroom, which makes him considerably larger, and the Fire Flower, which enables him to launch little fireballs at his foes. The Cape Feather is a new type of power-up that gives Mario the ability to spin to do damage to foes and fly as long as the user is able to keep their balance in the air. Another new addition is the ability to ride Yoshi, a dinosaur that has the ability to receive unique attacks from certain foes he has consumed while he is riding them. It is often essential to physically pick up and carry objects (such as keys) in order to access particular regions and then utilize those items in the right places to unlock those sections.
The overall universe of the game is broken up into a few main sections, each of which has a number of different levels. The majority of the levels take place outside, but there are also a few levels that take place underground and underwater. At least one haunted home may be found in every major zone. These houses are notorious for housing more complex traps and spectral foes that cannot be destroyed. In most games, the player must first complete a more challenging level known as a castle, which features more challenging foes and perilous traps, and then vanquish the boss foe that protects the castle before moving on to the next location.
Many of the stages have hidden exits that lead to optional areas. These optional areas include fortresses with recurring boss enemies, interconnected stages of the Star World, and Switch Palaces. Switch Palaces enable the player to materialize bricks of a specific color across all of the stages, thereby gaining access to power-ups and other hidden content. Hidden locations may also provide access to more sorts of dinosaurs, each of which possessed unique skills, such as the ability to breathe fire or fly.
