Front Mission 2089 was a watershed moment for the franchise because it was the first game created on a mobile phone. It was first made available in 2005, with monthly episode downloads. Front Mission 2089-I is set in 2089, one year before the Second Huffman Conflict. Players can fight for the OCU or the USN, but the plot and character development remain the same. The primary character artwork is the only thing that changes with that selection. The Nintendo DS game Front Mission 2089: Border of Madness includes the 2089-I plot. Border of Madness employs the OCU cast of characters from Front Mission 2089-I rather than allowing the player to pick which side to fight for. While 2089-II was not entirely incorporated, elements of it are there to connect the two games. New narrative elements and recurrent characters from the previous games were included to help integrate the 2089 mini-series into the main series.
