Guitar Hero: On Tour is a series of music video games for the Nintendo DS portable gaming system based on the Guitar Hero franchise. Vicarious Visions created the series, which RedOctane and Activision distribute. Since June 2008, three games in the series have been released: Guitar Hero: On Tour, Guitar Hero On Tour: Decades, and Guitar Hero On Tour: Modern Hits. As in previous Guitar Hero games, the player is challenged to play either the lead or bass guitar sections of rock songs by matching colored notes that scroll on the screen towards the player in rhythm with physical motions to win points and keep the virtual crowd happy. While the console versions of Guitar Hero utilize a separate guitar-shaped accessory, Vicarious Visions created a “Guitar Grip” item that plugs into the Game Boy Advance port on the Nintendo DS or DS Lite to be used with the games; the Grip is incompatible with the Nintendo DSi and Nintendo 3DS. The Guitar Grip has a strap to hold the game unit and four fret buttons; the user utilizes the fret buttons with the stylus to mimic strumming on the DS’s touch-sensitive screen. Each game includes more than 25 songs, track lists varying based on release area, and several single-player modes. The DS’s local wi-fi capabilities are used for multiplayer mode, allowing a player to compete with another player using songs from a separate iteration in the series.
