Sega Australia and Sega Europe are responsible for The Creative Assembly Australia’s Sonic Classic Collection, a compilation of Nintendo DS video games. It is a compilation of Sonic the Hedgehog’s 2nd Sonic the Hedgehog 3rd Sonic the Hedgehog Sonic and Knuckles (Sonic 3 and Knuckles, as well as Knuckles in Sonic 2). Sega of America officially announced this collection on December 2, 2009, and it was published on March 2, 2010, yet word of this compilation first surfaced when the Australian Government’s OFLC categorized it. It has two additional lock-on modes from the originals, allowing the player to play as Knuckles in Sonic 2 and the full version of Sonic 3 (named “Knuckles in Sonic 3” rather than the original “Sonic 3 & Knuckles” title). The games now have a save option; while players can “save anywhere,” they must resume the act where they saved; they can maintain their score and Chaos Emeralds from when they saved, as well as any extra lives and continues gained. There is also a picture gallery in the collection. Sonic Spinball, Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine, and Sonic 3D Blast were all meant to be included, but none made it into the final release. The game received mixed to good reviews from critics, scoring 70 out of 100 on Metacritic. The quality of the games received praise, although they were criticized for lacking a multiplayer feature and for including solely artwork as bonuses.
