Don and Katsu were standing outside their house one night with the full moon, admiring the incredible vista of the night sky. Don heard a weird wailing voice and asked Katsu if it was his, but Katsu stated he didn’t say anything. I don’t think he was misheard. Then the voice was heard again, this time from within the home, and this time, both Don and Katsu were terrified. They spotted the ghost of a raccoon-human girl once they got inside. While sobbing, said ghost murmured something like, ‘Father, where are you?’ and Don wondered if she was lost. Then she vanished, and the door opposite Don and Katsu abruptly opened, exposing a gateway with the Taiko pair being drawn into it. When Don emerged from the portal, he found himself alone in the forest of Iga village in Japan’s Edo era. He witnessed the same raccoon-human girl, Ponko, seeking her father alone, but the elderly ninja Master wouldn’t allow her since the yokai were after her. Don interrupts by asking Ponko whether she is the same girl he saw earlier, but Master misidentifies Don as a yokai and challenges Don to a taiko duel, which Don wins. Master apologized to Don for mistaking him for a yokai, but then a yokai (a flaming wheel yokai) appeared and saw the leaf hair decorations on Ponko’s, mistaking her for the demon king’s daughter. But as he attempts to catch her, he can’t stop himself from flying away, leaving the community empty-handed. Once at the village home, Master asks Don if he can defeat the yokai throughout Japan. Don consented, but Ponko asked Master whether she might accompany Don to look for her father’s whereabouts. Master agrees after some contemplation. So begins the fantastic trip…
