Capcom vs. SNK 2 mixes Street Fighter and The King of Fighters characters and gameplay. Street Fighter III, Garou: Mark of the Wolves, and Samurai Shodown inspired other elements, including fighting styles. Capcom vs. SNK 2 characters have no “Ratio.” Instead, the player can pick three team members and assign a ratio (up to four) to each. Console players can choose a 1-on-1 or 3-on-3 Arcade Mode battle without the Ratio System. The first game was based on The King of Fighters’ two-strength, four-button punches, and kicks system, but Capcom vs. SNK 2 is based on Street Fighter’s three-strength, six-button system. SNK characters have been tweaked to fit the 6-button style. Street Fighter Alpha shapes it. The engine’s ‘Grooves’ are similar to Capcom and SNK games. These control the character’s Super Gauge system and “Subsystems” like dashes, running, and guard cancels. Home versions of the game can program six lettered grooves. Players choose their team’s track before the match.
