Freestyle MetalX, billed as the “first freestyle motocross” video game, features eight go-anywhere areas loaded with items such as swimming pools and buildings to trick off in. Players can destroy windows, plow through parks, and do things that are typically illegal because no restrictions are enforced. In addition to riding through real-world locations, players can win reputation and cash by participating in side activities such as bus jumping, wheelies, and zipping through fire tunnels. Money can buy new equipment, such as bicycles, clothing, and accessories. There are nine professional motorcyclists to play as or against, including superstars like Kris “The Rock” Rourke and Ronnie “Kung Fu” Faisst. There are additional seven generic riders to choose from, bringing the total number of characters to 16. Players must guide these characters through various skill-based obstacles to unlock the remaining courses. Once opened, the eight levels combine smoothly to form a vast world. Each region hosts special events such as Big Air, Freestyle, Hill Climb, and Race, often including completing as many aerial tricks as possible to outscore the competition. Freestyle MetalX also consists of several sub-games to spice up the racing action. Players will ride over a cliff to see how many tricks they can pull off during their rapid descent, transform into a human dart while flinging themselves at a giant dartboard, and even play motocross pinball. Those bored with the available courses can use the built-in level editor to design their own. Regardless of mode, players can listen to hard-driving music from bands like Megadeath, Mötley Crüe, Motörhead, and Twisted Sister.
