X-Men Legends is an action role-playing video game published by Activision and developed by Raven Software. It was released in the fall of 2004 for the GameCube, PlayStation 2, and Xbox systems. Barking Lizards Technologies created the game’s N-Gage port and was released in early 2005. Players can choose from fifteen X-Men characters and switch between four computer- or human-controlled characters at any moment. X-Men Legends takes place outside of any specific Marvel Comics realm. The protagonist is Alison Crestmere, a young mutant with the capacity to summon and control volcanic activity. The X-Men are sent on various missions while Alison learns to control her talents at the X-Mansion. The X-Men eventually discovers Magneto’s scheme to engulf the Earth in darkness from his headquarters on Asteroid M. Critics gave X-Men Legends primarily favorable reviews. The Xbox version garnered the best reviews, with aggregate ratings of 83% and 82/100 on review aggregating websites GameRankings and Metacritic, respectively. Critics acclaimed Raven’s take on cel-shaded graphics. Due to the game’s success, a sequel, X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse, was created.
