You begin the game at an abandoned warehouse in the seedy city of Las Sombras, where you are planning to make a drug deal. Suddenly, chaos breaks out and everything goes to hell. You have been betrayed by the current cartel you are a part of, and as a result, you are out for retribution. You have the opportunity to play as any one of these five characters, whose names are Raven, Jason G, Gina, Lola, and Aaron, in this beat-em-up game with some mild role-playing game components. You navigate the city with up to two pals at your disposal, engaging in combat with other gang members along the way. If you come out on top in a one-on-one confrontation with a potential recruit, they will join your gang. You also have a criminality level, which allows members of other gangs as well as law enforcement to recognize you. You can reduce the amount of crime you commit by purchasing and then donning a variety of different costumes. By engaging in combat and accumulating experience points, you can also raise your character’s attack, stamina, and technique levels. In Beatdown, there are two different types of multiplayer modes: VS mode normal, which allows you to select up to three characters for your team and then choose between player vs. CPU, player vs. player, and CPU vs. CPU; and VS mode custom, which allows you to select up to three characters for your team and load a three character party that you have recruited from the single player game. Both of these modes allow you to play with up to four players simultaneously.
