The inhabitants of the planet Hillys in the far future are subjected to relentless assaults by the hostile extraterrestrial race known as DomZ. The number of kidnappings committed by DomZ is rising at an alarming rate, which is contributing to the deterioration of the situation. The forces of the Alpha Section, whose responsibility it is to safeguard residents, appear to be entirely ineffectual and are not even attempting to battle the DomZ. In the middle of this crisis, the shadowy organization known as IRIS made the accusation that the Alpha Section is complicit in a vast government plot and is working toward the goal of disclosing the truth through the medium of media.

Jade, a teenage journalist, and photographer, together with her friends Pey’j and Double H, are under the player’s control throughout the game. IRIS makes touch with her after she has witnessed a DomZ attack firsthand and asks her to become an action reporter for the organization. Now that she has been given this mission, Jade must work her way into the Alpha Section in order to expose the government conspiracy and, ultimately, discover the truth for herself.

The action game Beyond Good & Evil features a wide variety of gameplay elements. There are some sections of racing, shooting, fighting, and platforming action, but the majority of the gameplay focuses on sneaking around and solving puzzles. In combat, Jade makes use of her staff and employs a variety of her powers to carry out long-range attacks and find solutions to challenges. It is necessary to switch between the characters and make use of their unique abilities in order to solve many of the puzzles. Additionally, it is frequently necessary to coordinate the actions of two characters in order to achieve the precise cooperation that is required to solve some of the puzzles. In addition to sections that are dangerous and contain puzzles and monsters, there is also a city and other friendlier locations to explore. These areas contain shops where a variety of products and gadgets can be purchased (and in some cases are required to be purchased). There are a number of different types of minigames, as well as an online rating system (used by entering codes online after they are assigned in-game when the game is saved).
