Operation Cobra was a World War II operation that was planned by United States Army General Omar Bradley to break out from the Normandy area after the D-Day landings the previous month. The third primary Call of Duty game centered around this operation, which took place in Normandy, France. During the 88 days building up to the liberation of Paris, you take on the role of four different allied sides as American, Canadian, British, and Polish soldiers across the course of fourteen historical single-player missions. Surprisingly, you are unable to take control of the French 2nd Armored Division, which was responsible for freeing Paris.

The conflicts are typically very theatrical, with multiple fights and programmed events happening at the same time, consisting of infantry and vehicles, and taking place in environments that can be partially destroyed. In the meanwhile, there is cinematics that provides an explanation of what has happened. A number of the game’s gameplay mechanics have been preserved or made a comeback, including a mild auto-aim feature, a damage system that lets you recover health if you hide for a moment, and smoke grenades. The option to throw back unexploded grenades is one of the new features, as is the requirement that certain activities be completed by pressing a specific sequence of buttons in the correct order. It is possible to accomplish this feat during hand-to-hand combat by ripping the weapon out of the hands of enemy soldiers. The adversaries collaborate in groups, experiment with a variety of strategies, and look for places to hide.

Standard deathmatch (battle), team deathmatch (team combat), capture the flag (with either two flags or two sides seeking to control a single, neutral flag), and headquarters are the primary game types available in the multiplayer component (two sides either defend or attack a structure, and players can now respawn after dying). The new mode, War, plays out very similarly to the gameplay of previous installments in the Battlefield franchise. Each of the two teams begins the match with two control points, and there is a neutral flag placed in the middle. The goal is to take control of all five flags at once.

There are various multiplayer classes, including Rifleman, Heavy Assault, Light Assault, Medic, Scout, Support, and Anti-Armor. There are also multiple-occupancy vehicles, such as the Sherman Tank, the Panzer IV, the Jeep, the Horch, the BMW, and the Harley. Each class has unique powers. A conventional rank system exists throughout a single game, and it allows your abilities to grow if you perform well. In addition, there is a TrueSkill rating that takes into account your performance across all games. Additionally, in contrast to the games that came before, your squad will not immediately be sent back to the lobby after a match. Instead, they will remain grouped together as they were before the match.
