When the dragon rider Rynn returns to her hometown, she discovers that it has been obliterated and that all of its inhabitants have been slaughtered. Arokh, her dragon, tells her that he and they are being summoned to the city of Sardana by a voice that they both hear. When they get there, they learn that a kind of three-headed creature known as Desert Lords has been wreaking havoc on the local human population as of late. In order for the humans to defeat them, they will need the assistance of powerful allies. However, the passageway leading to the land of dragons has been locked, and the only thing that can unlock it is a dragon of the Elder Breed. It is now up to Rynn and Arokh to travel to the world of the dragons, vanquish the Desert Lords, and mend the rift that has developed between humans and dragons.
Action and role-playing game components are both present in Drakan: The Ancients’ Gates. Throughout the course of the game, the player will have the opportunity to play the role of both Rynn and Arokh. Flying to faraway regions and squaring off against some of the game’s most formidable adversaries are both parts of Arokh’s gameplay. The gameplay for Rynn incorporates more features of role-playing games (RPGs), such as the fact that she can specialize in the skills of martial combat, archery, or magic by collecting experience by slaying foes.
