Final Fantasy XI, also known as Final Fantasy XI Online, is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game that was the first to support cross-platform play between the PlayStation 2 and the personal computer. It was also the first MMORPG for the Xbox 360. To play, all versions of the game require a monthly subscription. The world of Vana’diel serves as the setting for Final Fantasy XI, a diverse world with climates ranging from northern glaciers and southern deserts to ethereal realms and sky landmasses. According to legend, Vana’diel was created as a playground for the Gods and their children, who were spawned from a massive and sentient Crystal. Several Final Fantasy XI expansion packs feature major plot points based on the creation lore’s sentient Crystal, Gods, Children, and the truths behind them. The game’s events occur 20 years after the Crystal War, a devastating conflict in which the Middle Land nations of Bastok, San d’Oria, and Windurst fought and defeated the Shadow Lord and his army of Beastmen. In the original story, players deal with the aftermath of this conflict, and with the expansion pack Wings of the Goddess, they can travel back in time to aid in the war effort. Several parallel worlds are available, including Dynamis and Abyssea, where the beastmen won the Crystal War and conquered the land.
