Final Fantasy XI (XI Fainaru Fantaj Irebun? ), also known as Final Fantasy XI Online, is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed and published as part of the Final Fantasy series by Square (later Square Enix). Hiromichi Tanaka designed and produced the game, released in Japan on May 16, 2002, for PlayStation 2 and Microsoft Windows-based personal computers in November of that year. The game was the first cross-platform MMORPG and the first MMORPG for the Xbox 360. [1] To play, all versions of the game require a monthly subscription. [2] The story takes place in the fantasy world of Vana’diel, where player-created avatars can compete and collaborate in various objectives to develop various jobs, skills, and in-game item rewards. Players can complete various quests as they progress through the game’s in-game hierarchy and the main plot. Since its initial release in 2002, five expansion packs[3] and six add-on scenarios have been released. Each expansion pack and add-on introduces a new major storyline to the Final Fantasy XI universe and new areas, quests, events, and item rewards. Square Enix announced in March 2015 that Final Fantasy XI would receive one more final main scenario (spread out over three parts in 2015). The servers for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360 versions of the game will be decommissioned in 2016. [4] Square Enix is developing a mobile client for the game in collaboration with Korean developer Nexon,[5] and a spinoff mobile game, Final Fantasy Grandmasters, is in development with a 2015 release date.
