Formula One 05 for the PlayStation 2 was released in Europe on July 1, 2005, and later that year in Australia. It included the ‘Career Mode’ concept from Formula One 04, which allows players to progress through the team over five years (albeit a repeat version of the 2005 season each time). This game also supports EyeToy: Cameo, which allows players to place their face on a driver when creating a profile, but unlike F1 04, they cannot select their helmet. Jenson Button, David Coulthard, and Narain Karthikeyan are the cover athletes. Players begin by testing for smaller teams (Minardi, Jordan, and Red Bull Racing (a generic car exists but is only used in Time Attack mode, as in F1 04)). Through good tests and impressive race performances, players work their way up the grid throughout their “career.” As previously stated, consistently poor performance will result in dismissal from the player’s current team. There are also short-out tests against the team’s second (or third, depending on the player’s current status within the team), in which both drivers complete a set of five laps each, and the driver with the fastest overall time (one-time-based on the fastest first, second, and third sectors added together) wins the race. Players can now see the trophies earned for winning races and championships in Career Mode for the first time. As with F1 04, “classic” cars (such as the Williams FW11) are unlocked after certain conditions are met, such as winning the World Championship. Helmets for Career Mode are also unlocked, and Time Attack Mode now includes a hidden track (the Detroit street circuit used for the Detroit Grand Prix and the Paul Ricard circuit in France([citation needed]). Notably, because this game was developed before the change in qualifying regulations midway through the actual 2005 season, every race in Race Weekend, Championship, and Career Mode uses the original “aggregated times” format from the early part of the actual 2005 season. This game also supports NetPlay. The opening video features the song “Butterflies & Hurricanes” by Muse, an English alternative rock band. For the first time in years, fans agreed that this was a huge improvement in the series and a much-needed shot in the arm it needed. Many people have criticized Studio Liverpool’s lack of ambition and progress since the series debuted on the PS2 platform. With the release of Formula One 05, people saw that Studio Liverpool had made great strides in gameplay handling and AI. However, there were complaints about the AI being too easy on the hardest settings and the penalty system introduced in Formula One 05, which automatically reduced revs during a penalty rather than the traditional “drive-through” penalties seen in previous games. Apart from these minor issues, fans agreed that Studio Liverpool had redeveloped the brand as a stepping stone for improvement for the inevitable release of the 2006 edition. Also see[edit]
