Ghostbusters: The Video Game, an official sequel to the two Ghostbusters films, puts the player in control of Rookie, the unnamed newest member of the Ghostbusters. A mysterious ghostly shock wave sweeps through New York City shortly after the Ghostbusters are hired, prompting them to launch an investigation. They will visit many locations from the movies and meet returning characters and some new locations and characters throughout the game. As the Rookie,, the player must explore levels in order to find and capture any ghosts, with the help of fellow Ghostbusters who are following you. A ghost must first be weakened by using any of the proton pack weapon modes to which it is vulnerable, and then dragged to a trap set by the player or their teammates. Other enemy types must be defeated by exposing a weak point and then removing it with the proton pack’s blast stream or by simply dealing enough damage to the enemy. If the Rookie takes too much damage, they will be knocked unconscious, and their allies will try to help them get back up. If any of their allies are knocked unconscious, the Rookie can do the same, and if all current team members are knocked down,, the game will return to the last checkpoint. Scanning enemies and objects in the world yields information, and finding hidden pages in the levels yields concept art for the entries. Over the course of the game, the Rookie receives upgrades to their proton pack automatically, and by finding enough scanner entries, they can increase their health. The Wii and PS2 versions of Ghostbusters: The Video Game have the same story, level settings, and most of the dialogue as the XBOX360/PS3/Windows version, but there are a few differences. Levels are condensed, redesigned, and sometimes entirely removed. As a result, the art assets were changed to a cartoon-like style, and some bosses were redesigned. While there is no online mode in this version, two players can play through the story mode in co-op, which is not possible in the high definition version. Finally, the player can choose to play as a female Rookie, though this has no effect on the story (and some characters still refer to the Rookie as being male).
