Neversoft’s Guitar Hero: Aerosmith is a music rhythm game published by Activision and distributed by RedOctane. It was released on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles, with Budcat Creations solely responsible for the PlayStation 2 port, Vicarious Visions responsible exclusively for the Wii port, and Aspyr Media solely responsible for publishing the Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X ports. The game was released in Europe on June 26, 2008, North America on June 29, 2008, Australia on August 6, 2008, and Japan on October 9, 2008. Guitar Hero: Aerosmith was available as a bundle with a specially designed guitar controller and a standalone game. The game is considered a sequel to Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock and expands on the previous game’s available features. As in earlier games in the series, the player uses a guitar-shaped controller to simulate rock music playing by playing in time to scrolling notes on-screen. It is the first game in the series to primarily focus on the work of one rock band, with Aerosmith songs accounting for roughly 60% of the soundtrack, while the remaining songs are from bands influenced by or who have opened for Aerosmith. The single-player Career mode follows the band’s history through several real-world-inspired venues, interspersed with interviews with band members about their past. Aerosmith re-recorded four songs specifically for this game and took part in a motion capture session to create their in-game appearances. Guitar Hero: Aerosmith is the series’ final installment to only include guitar and bass as possible instrument choices. The following installment (Guitar Hero World Tour) would include additional roles to create a full band experience. While Guitar Hero: Aerosmith retains the same gameplay as previous Guitar Hero games, it has received criticism for being shorter and more accessible than the last Guitar Hero titles, as well as for being difficult to justify its price point; additionally, with the game’s strong focus on one band, reviewers felt that the game’s ultimate enjoyment rested on the player’s appreciation for Aerosmith’s music.
