Guitar Hero Smash Hits is a music rhythm game and the fourth expansion game in the Guitar Hero series. The game includes 48 songs from the series’ previous five games—Guitar Hero, Guitar Hero II, Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s, Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, and Guitar Hero: Aerosmith—redesigned to be based on master recordings and to include support for full band play, which was first introduced in Guitar Hero World Tour. Beenox developed the game, published by Activision and distributed by RedOctane for release on the PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Wii, and Xbox 360 systems in the second half of June 2009. Many elements from previous titles in the series, such as Guitar Hero World Tour and Guitar Hero: Metallica, are reused in this game. Beenox created venues for the game based on various Wonders of the World, to play the greatest songs from the series at venues located in the greatest places on Earth. While critics well received the game’s soundtrack and expansion into a four-player band, the game was heavily criticized for being a full-priced standalone title rather than downloadable content for previous games in the series.
