The Japanese adult visual novel H2O: Footprints in the Sand was developed by Makura and made available on June 23, 2006, for Windows as a DVD. On April 24, 2008, a version of the game that could be played on the PlayStation 2 was released with the title H2O +. This version had the adult content removed, but in its place will be additional scenarios and graphics that were not included in the initial release.

The main character of H2O is Takuma Hirose, a young man who is blind and attends the junior high school. The reason for Takuma’s blindness is never explained in the novel. His mother’s untimely death had a profound effect on him emotionally, and as a result, he withdrew into himself and became very reclusive as a result of this. As a consequence of this, Takuma and his uncle uproot their lives and go to the outskirts of the city, where he will start attending a new junior high school. At his new school, he meets a number of new ladies, but out of all of them, the ones he comes to know the best are the firm and obstinate Hayami Kohinata, the kind and obliging Hinata Kagura, and the happy and enigmatic Otoha. Takuma’s medical condition starts to improve as a direct result of his interactions with these girls, and he ultimately makes a full recovery.
