The first Harry Potter book and film each had their own adaptation for the then-current consoles two years after they were released for other platforms’ respective editions. This rendition of Harry Potter’s first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is presented as a third-person action adventure game, just like the computer and PlayStation versions.

The game is broken up into separate days and nights after the initial tutorial that takes place in Ollivander’s Wand Shop and the first night that the player spends at Hogwarts. Lessons take up much of Harry’s time during the day, and they typically teach him new spells. When Harry Potter sneaks around the castle at night, the most interesting events take place. These include Harry’s duel with Draco Malfoy, his battle with a troll in the dungeons, and other pivotal moments from both the film and the book.

The majority of the challenges consist of platform parts in which Harry must traverse gaps and maintain his balance along edges. It is not uncommon for there to be obstacles in the form of monsters that must be vanquished by casting the appropriate spells, and occasionally there will be riddles that can only be solved by using magic. In order for Harry to avoid being taken back to the common room throughout the night, he needs to keep an eye out for prefects that are walking the halls of the castle. The game also includes broomstick combat, complete with a Quidditch match against Slytherin.

After each student’s lesson, Hogwarts becomes open for free exploration. It is always possible to review previously studied material in order to improve one’s grades; however, this is typically only possible after a certain number of more difficult spells have been mastered. Also, a large number of collectibles can be found in both the open and hidden areas of the game. For example, if Harry collects 20 wizard cards, his health will increase, and if he collects Every Flavour Beans, he can trade them in at Fred and George’s shop for additional cards and other helpful items.
