The original Tomb Raider game has been remade as Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Anniversary, which features a graphics engine that is technologically more advanced. Although several of the cutscenes and a significant portion of the conversation within the game have been enlarged or tweaked in different ways, the overall plot remains the same. The locations are the same as in the original game and are accessed in the same order; however, they have been redesigned with different layouts and almost entirely different puzzles to accommodate the new maneuvers that were introduced in Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Legend. These new maneuvers include swinging on ropes and using a grappling hook at specific points.
In this iteration of the game, puzzles are often more centered on acrobatics, with ledges playing a much more important role as a level design element. To progress through the game, players are required to perform a combination of jumping and shimmying across these ledges. This mode of gameplay nearly totally takes the place of the key-retrieval puzzles and block-pushing challenges that were in the original. The gameplay of the fight sequences is very identical to that of the original game, with the exception that the player must now manually activate targeting. Instead of being integrated into the adventure like they were in the first iteration, certain boss battles now take place within their own self-contained stages. The player will frequently be required to employ Lara’s new “adrenaline dodge” skill during these battles. This ability slightly slows down time when an opponent charges at Lara while in a “enraged” condition. Some of these battles may also have elements of puzzle-solving. In certain moments, the player will be asked to take part in a series of quick-time events.
