The 2011 Madden NFL installment introduced new features such as a play-calling system called “GameFlow,” a new game mode called “Online Team Play,” and various other features. The game was advertised as “simpler, faster, and deeper” than previous versions. The Wii version’s superstar mode was removed from this Madden installment. “GameFlow” allows the player to create a situational game plan based on down and situation, and is advertised to cut playing time in half compared to previous years of “Madden.” Another new feature, “Online Team Play,” allows for 3 vs. 3 cooperative play. In online head-to-head games, players can scout opponents to gain a competitive advantage. A new kick meter, a new audible system, and an improved locomotion animation system are the other differences between this installment and previous ones. Lighting changes, run blocking changes, new quarterback ratings, and a new Old Spice “Swagger” rating have also been added to the game. Gus Johnson replaces Tom Hammond on the play-by-play broadcast commentary. According to one reviewer, Johnson’s “penchant for the dramatic in real life keeps you on the edge of your seat as you turn the corner for an RB sprint or heave a desperation, Hail Mary.” Cris Collinsworth returns as the color commentator from previous editions.

Users can build a team in this mode by purchasing player packs. These packs are purchased with coins earned by winning games, scoring touchdowns, etc. They can also be bought with real money using the user’s PlayStation Network or Xbox Live account. As the user gains more coins, they can buy better players’ packs, eventually building their “Ultimate Team.” This model has received some negative feedback with regards to ‘Player Contracts’ attached to each ‘Player Card.’ When purchased, ‘Player Cards’ have a 10-match contract that decreases by one with each game (even if due to disconnection). When a ‘Player Card’ contract reaches zero, you cannot use that player in your team until his contract is replenished. A contract card purchased with coins replenishes a contract on a “Player Card.” As a result, keeping a good team “on contract” without spending real money is extremely difficult. It is also possible to have a low number of coins and insufficient players to play ‘Madden Ultimate Team,’ unless you want to spend real money for more coins. To replenish your players’ contracts or buy new packs – to try to fill the vacant team positions preventing you from playing the mode.
