In the fourth installment of the Atelier Iris series, players assume the role of Vayne Aurelius, a student at the Al Revis Academy for Alchemy. While there, they are tasked with completing several missions and quests that have been laid out for them by a professor associated with the school. In the event that a player is unable to accomplish these objectives, they will be forced to remain behind. In addition, the narrative will develop differently based on who the player decides to collaborate with during these quests.

The gameplay is reminiscent of role-playing games (RPGs), but it also includes other types of content. Instead of “leveling up” through vanquishing foes, the player will use a “crafting” system that gives them control over how their character will advance in the game. This system will give them the option to tweak whichever traits they like. In addition, players have the ability to “make” goods and weapons utilizing a variety of different objects that are located all around the environment.

Players will no longer have random engagements, which is something that is more prevalent in many RPGs. Instead, players will be able to choose who or what they want to battle with thanks to the ability to view the symbols of their opponents on the board and decide whether or not they want to fight them.

The PSP version includes multiplayer combat, an increased number of things that may be synthesized, and the option to decrease the amount of time it takes for the game to load.
