Microids’ Master Rallye is one of the thousands of off-road racing games, so what makes it stand out? It could be because it is based on well-known European and Asian endurance races in their respective countries. Master Rallye for PS2, one of Microids’ final releases for the European market, is set to compete with other games like V-Rally 3 for the genre championship. It remains to be seen whether it has the finesse to compete with Codemasters’ Colin McRae Rally 3, but it is a very good game in its own right. Master Rallye’s races offer diverse skill-based challenges in exotic locations such as France and Italy and slightly more relaxed and less exotic Russia. As a result, you will be forced to adapt to various weather conditions, including rain and snow, which will significantly impact the handling of these off-road beasts. Your ability to quickly adapt to a situation will serve you better than mastering the layout of each circuit. The game’s courses are rarely constrained, allowing players to choose the best path from start to finish. Avoiding unnecessary bumps and obstacles can mean the difference between first and second place at the finish line. The PS2 version outperforms the PC version, hampered by a lack of decent third-party control pads and the occasional USB steering wheel. Sony’s uniform button layout, analog control, and vibration compatibility allow players to feel their way around Master Rallye’s circuits, encouraging them to react appropriately. Split screen mode for two players also works well. It’s competitive, and it pushes its players to improve and become faster racers. It’s a great way to practice your driving skills, and, like the rest of the game, it’s a lot of fun.
