Mega Man X7’s plot occurs in the 22nd century when humans coexist with robots known as “Reploids.” Because some Reploids engage in violent and destructive crime, a police force known as the “Maverick Hunters” was formed to combat it. The world is slowly recovering as the Reploid conflicts continue following the Nightmare phenomenon event of Mega Man X6. However, as is customary in new cities, Maverick crime is rising. As the recent crime wave hits, X struggles to answer moral questions that have plagued him since joining the Maverick Hunters: “Are we doing the right thing to solve this matter?” This leads him to the decision, “I’ve had enough of this violence.” Unable to calm his conscience, he withdraws from the frontlines and takes on a more strategic support role at headquarters. With X’s retirement, there is a massive power vacuum, and many independent groups form to fill the void left by the hunter. The “Red Alert Syndicate,” which has grown large enough to become a dominant force, is prominent among these groups. The Red Alert is a new Reploid group similar to the Repliforce but consists of vigilantes. They claim to hunt Mavericks, but they appear to do more. One of their members, Axl, has had enough of their “murdering” and attempts to leave the group. Red, the group’s leader, is enraged by Axl’s abandonment and goes on a rampage to reclaim Axl.
