In the late 22nd century, humans began construction on an orbital elevator that would eventually take them to the surface of the Moon. It was decided to put a Reploid named Lumine in charge of the project. Lumine was a member of the newest generation of Reploids, which, for some reason, could not evolve into Mavericks (i.e. turn hostile towards humans). Lumine was abducted not long after that by individuals who remain a mystery. X, Axl, and Zero make up the Maverick Hunters team, and they are tasked with tracking down the kidnappers and discovering the motivations behind their actions. However, in addition to that, they will have to contend with enemies from their history… Mega Man X8 moves away from the 3D gameplay elements introduced by its predecessor but retains a visual style comparable to that of earlier Mega Man X games. The player is free to tackle the levels in any order they choose, just like in traditional Mega Man games, but at the end of each class, they are required to defeat a boss. The player has control over three different characters, X, Axl, and Zero, who each have their unique approach to the game: X can don body parts and armor, Axl is an expert with firearms and can hover and glide through the air, and Zero specializes in close-range attacks.
