Checkpoints, denoted by columns of light, are spread out along the course of a race. In specific competitions, the order in which the checkpoints are to be passed must follow a specific protocol. In this instance, there is a bright arrow that is see-through that directs you to the subsequent checkpoint. In some competitions, the checkpoints can be passed through in any sequence the participant chooses. In that scenario, the arrow will take you toward the closest checkpoint—A screenshot is taken from within the game Midnight Club 2. When traveling from one checkpoint to the next, it is up to the player to decide which path to take. The open-world setting of the game does not have any man-made obstructions that direct the player to follow a predetermined route through the landscape. It is possible to reach the next checkpoint by traveling through any part of the free-roaming cruising mode between races that may be driven through or jumped over.
