This 12-level game begins after the monsters complete an orientation program hosted by Roz, who teaches them the training fundamentals. The levels are distributed across three training grounds on Scare Island. The Urban Training Grounds, Desert Training Grounds, and Arctic Training Grounds each have four areas to explore, with names that allude to the nature of their design. Each region’s scenery varies from a city park to a frozen lake, and players can choose to play as Sulley or Mike, with each monster having unique moves and scare abilities. The game aims to successfully scare all the robot children on the island (known as “Nerves”) and graduate from monster training with honors. This is accomplished by accumulating bronze, silver, and gold medals throughout the game. The bronze medal can be obtained by scaring five Nerves on a level, the silver medal by finding and collecting ten “Monsters, Inc.” Tokens scattered on a story, and the gold medal by scaring all eight Nerves on a level. Obtaining the bronze medal in each sub-level of one training ground reveals a hidden item that may aid the player in reaching previously inaccessible areas. Extra Try Tokens (which give the player different lives), Monsters, Inc. Tokens (which earn silver medals for every ten collected), and Primordial Ooze (the substance that gives the monsters their scare power) are among the items used. The random Bag O’ Calories heals the player, while mailboxes provide helpful tips and information. Although nerves and things are hidden, they can be found by searching in and around boxes and other objects.
