Myst III: Exile is the third installment of the graphic adventure puzzle video game Myst. Exile was developed by Presto Studios and published by Ubisoft, as opposed to the previous games in the series Myst and Riven, produced by Cyan Worlds and posted by Brderbund. On May 8, 2001, the game was released on four compact discs for both Mac OS and Microsoft Windows; versions for the Xbox and PlayStation 2 followed in late 2002. As in previous games, the player takes on the role of the Stranger, an Atrus friend. Atrus, a D’ni race member, can create links to other worlds known as Ages by writing descriptive books. In Exile, Atrus has written an Age for the D’ni to live on while rebuilding their civilization; however, it is stolen by an unknown figure. To reclaim Atrus’ book, the Stranger pursues the thief. Presto Studios, known for its adventure game series The Journeyman Project, was tasked with creating the third Myst game by the franchise’s creators. Presto worked to create a diverse and logical approach to puzzles and Ages and make the antagonist sympathetically multifaceted.
