This update to the long-running N.H.L. series includes new rules, updated rosters, season schedules, and many new features. Deking is now done with the left analog stick, with star players’ signature moves that confuse opponents and reward skill. The same stick is used to improve shooting accuracy. As you prepare to shoot, a bull’s eye appears in the enemy goal, and you can quickly move the target to the corners for precision. Statistics such as speed and size are now reflected in the players’ momentum and turning radius during gameplay to supplement the individual qualities. You can generate momentum for quick speed boosts to get past opponents quickly. The introduction of R.P.M. (Realistic Puck Momentum) dynamics has increased puck randomness, as a shot off the mask can now stun goalies. Another minor addition is the ice deformation during the match. The thumbstick is used for “face sculpting” – changing the different features – in the player creation mode, where you can now apply bruises, broken noses, black eyes, and scars to your players. All of the regular game modes are present. The Dynasty Mode from the previous version is the most complete, which includes scouting and full management options inside and outside the arena. In contrast to the last game, you can now intervene during simulated A.I. games and help your team win. The P.C., PS2, and Xbox versions all support online multiplayer games, and the PS2 edition includes the original N.H.L. 94 game, one of the series’ first.
