The events of Onimusha: Warlords take place in Japan in the 16th century, during a time when Nobunaga Oda was the dominant figure in a civil war. You take on the role of Samanosuke Akechi, who tragically loses his life while attempting to thwart the capture of little Princess Yuki, who is Yoshitatsu Saito’s sister. On the other hand, Akechi is given a second opportunity at life and is challenged to run the gauntlet posed by the Ogres.

With his newfound strength, Samanosuke is tasked with battling his way through the treacherous dungeons of Inabayama Castle. The power of the gauntlet is increased whenever a monster is vanquished since the gauntlet consumes the creature’s soul. Samanosuke’s health and magic will be restored by some souls, while others can be put to use to strengthen his weapons, armor, and other things. It is necessary to power up weapons in order to not only improve their damage and the potency of the magic they are related with, but also to pass past certain specific locks located around the castle. It will be necessary to locate certain items in one section of the castle in order to unlock doors or otherwise get around obstacles in another section of the castle. Additionally, there will be times when the player will take control of Samanosuke’s companion Kaede while Samanosuke is unable to continue the adventure for one reason or another. Kaede has the ability to access some areas that are inaccessible to Samanosuke, as well as pick locks and throw kunai; nevertheless, she is unable to absorb souls or unlock any lock that is designed for the person who is wearing the Ogre gauntlet.

The improved High Definition version released in 2018 for Windows and consoles now supports widescreen resolutions of both 16:9 and the more traditional 4:3 aspect ratio. Now that the controls have been improved, players are able to maneuver and battle with greater precision using the analog stick.
