Pump It Up: Exceed is a dancing game in the style of the Dance Dance Revolution games. The Pump It Up dance mat is unique because the arrows are set on diagonals, and a button is in the middle, allowing for greater complexity in the dance moves required for the game. The player generally watches a music video while symbols scroll by. The player must use their feet to match the symbols on the screen to those on the Pump It Up dance pad. Hitting the arrows in time with the music will keep the player’s life bar full and give them a good rating, while doing the opposite will drain the player’s life bar and give them a bad rating. The game ends when the life bar is completely depleted. The game has several modes, including Arcade Mode, which requires the player to score an “A” or “S” on three consecutive songs. This allows the player to play an additional piece. Completing pieces in Arcade mode unlocks them for use in Home Mode. Home Mode allows the player to select any amount from their library. Sudden Death Mode requires the player to perform a song flawlessly, or the game will end. Survival Mode – After completing twenty pieces in Home Mode, the player unlocks this mode. This is an endurance test for the player, as the game keeps presenting them with songs to listen to until their life bar is depleted. Video Mode is unlocked after the player has completed twenty pieces in either Home or Arcade Mode. It lets the player simply watch videos for any song they’ve finished. Tutorial mode teaches the player how to play the game. The game also records the players’ statistics (their rating grades for each song). The PS2 version of the game has 101 songs, while the Xbox version has 97 songs but allows you to download more. Because some songs are more complex than others, the game provides a rating from one to twenty to inform the player of how difficult a task they are undertaking is by selecting a specific song. If the player chooses that setting, two dance mats will be required for some pieces that offer a freestyle option.
