Rex Leinster is a young man from the remote, backwater planet Earth who aspires to travel through space like his father one day. He enters a local space race hoping to make some money and gain some notoriety, but he loses by a hair’s breadth. However, his performance catches the attention of a Lightning Express shipping company recruiter, and he is soon hired as their newest cargo pilot. Unfortunately, Lightning Express is perpetually bankrupt, uses outdated and poorly maintained equipment, and is generally regarded as a laughingstock throughout the galaxy. But, after all, everyone has to start somewhere, right? Rim Runners is a fun, anime-style sci-fi visual novel. The player assumes the role of Rex, a rookie cargo pilot attempting to establish himself with the crew of his ship, the Jack Pot. Like most visual novels, the game progresses linearly, with dialogue choices occasionally affecting the flow of the story. The player can freely explore the ship and speak with its crew and passengers at various points. When situations become heated or dangerous, there are also “Live Command” sequences; during these events, choices have a strict time limit, it is not possible to save or reload the game, and incorrect choices can easily result in losing a job or even a game over.
