The Romance of the Three Kingdoms series is a turn-based grand strategy game, and its eighth installment, Romance of the Three Kingdoms VIII, is the eighth game in the series. Once more, it is based on the actual events that took place in China during the time known as the Three Kingdoms. The events of the novel took place in China during the third century A.D., during a time when the Han Dynasty was unable to put an end to a civil war in the country, and when soldiers from various provinces competed against one another in an effort to win the right to rule the entire nation.
The game has been improved in various respects in comparison to earlier iterations of the series. The player can now take control of any one of the game’s eight main characters at any one time. The player has the ability to construct 100 of the 711 different officer characters. Each of these officers has special abilities, which can be put to use in battle and contribute to the development of a formidable army. Additionally, the player has complete discretion over when the events of the game begin, with options ranging from 184 A.D. (the year of the Yellow Turban Rebellion) to 234 A.D. (death of Zhuge Liang, one of the most important strategists of the time period).
