Rugby Challenge 2006 is a single-player game that combines rugby simulation and management elements. There are several game modes: Friendly: a match where the player can represent any club against another. The World Championship, the RBS 6 Nations, Three Nations, the European Cup, a Tour, Leagues, and Cups are all part of the competition. In the Tour, the player can choose any of the international teams represented and tour Europe, Oceania, Africa, or America, playing against different nations in each location. The English Premiership, the Top 14 (France), the Celtic League (now, 2015, called the Pro 12 and featuring teams from Ireland, Italy, Scotland, and Wales), and the Southern League, which includes teams from New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa, are among the leagues available. There is also the option to make your league. The Cups that can be competed for mirror the leagues that can be played in: the English Cup, French Cup, Celtic Cup, Southern Cup, and Super Cup, and the option to create and compete for a custom cup. This category contains five different game options—matches from the past. South Africa had been unbeaten for sixty years when New Zealand ended it in 1956. In the first challenge, the player controls the South African team and attempts to keep them from losing. There is ten ‘Classic Matches’ total, with the remaining nine locked until the first challenge is completed. These include playing as Scotland and attempting to defeat England; playing as the British Isles and trying to beat New Zealand; playing as the United States and trying to defeat France; and playing as Wales and trying to defeat Ireland. Attempt Survival: The player competes in increasingly challenging matches, scoring more tries each. Hot Potato: A variation on the classic game in which a player cannot hold the ball for more than three seconds without being struck. Old School Rugby: Games are played under old rules, where no points are awarded for a try, but only from the penalty that follows. Superstars: In this standard game version, only one player from each team can score points. Career Mode: This is a rugby management mode in which the player takes control of a team in Division Four of a fictional league and must manage them through the seasons to become a champion team. Players can be traded and trained, the club’s finances must be addressed, coaches must be appointed, and so on. The game also includes a training mode and numerous bonus features such as other stadiums, teams, balls, and game effects, all locked until the player meets specific criteria. Matches can last three, five, seven, or fifteen minutes, be played during the day or night, including weather effects, and be played on one of three difficulty levels: Fun, Normal, or Intensive Care.
