The tale of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed fills in the gaps between Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, which explains how the Rebellion came to be. Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith relates the story of how the Sith were defeated. On the planet Kashyyk, where the player’s Jedi father was engaged in battle, the player assumes control of a young child who was discovered by Darth Vader during the conflict. Vader hires the young kid to serve as his own personal apprentice in order to prepare him for the task of eliminating the remaining scattered Jedi throughout the galaxy.

The majority of the gameplay consists of the player exploring levels and using force powers such as lightning and grip to decimate enemies. The player can do this by tossing them off of high areas, electrocuting them, or even using environmental objects to slam them into their opponents. Additionally, the player has access to Force Repulse, which can propel enemies backward. There is also the traditional light saber, which can slash through enemies and has the ability to change colors depending on the crystals of a particular hue that are found throughout the game.

When players successfully eliminate foes, they are able to level up their powers and gain points toward the purchase of more potent attacks by filling up the blue orbs that are left behind. By using flashy and sophisticated moves on foes, it is possible to gain additional force orbs. The player will face enemies at the conclusion of each level, which might be anything from a powerful Jedi to a massive creature like a Rancor. These bosses could even be both. A sequence of button-pressing scenes, similar to those found in the God of War games, must be completed by the player before they can defeat these bosses.

This version is distinct from its siblings for the next-generation consoles in that it is the only one to feature the Havok engine and different level layouts, including a brand-new level that takes place among the ruins of the Jedi Temple. Additionally, this version features a unique narrative (ex: In the first stage of the game the player takes control of Darth Vader, on the PS3 and 360 versions, Vader lands in the middle of the day to encounter a Fleet Admiral and fight the Jedi at the end at his hut, while the PS2 version has Vader landing in the night, encounter a Clone Commander and fight the Jedi in an open field, surrounded by wreckage and fires from downed Tie-Fighters).
