Steel Dragon EX is made up of two shoot them up games. Shienryu (Steel Dragon) – a port of the arcade and Sega Saturn game Shienryu Explosion (Steel Dragon Evolution) – a sequel to Steel Dragon, which was previously only available in arcades Shienryu Explosion (Steel Dragon Evolution) – a sequel to Steel Dragon, which was previously Steel Dragon Evolution provides the player with three different spacecraft and six different pilots to choose from. The pilots only control the shot color, while the craft’s speed and fire power vary. Up to two players can play at the same time. The game aims to progress far enough through each stage to defeat the final boss and thus win all levels. Players have limited lives; however, extra lives can be obtained throughout the game. The main feature of Steel Dragon Evolution is the analog main fire button. The more pressure applied to the button, the more influential the player’s craft’s firepower becomes. As a trade-off, the speed of the art is reduced. Alternatively, three controllers can be pressed for low, medium, and heavy fire. If a player destroys an enemy, a multiplier ranging from 1x to 256x is applied, depending on the firepower used. On the other hand, some enemies drop stars with multipliers ranging from 1x to 256x. In this case, the scale is flipped, and not firing at all while collecting stars yields the highest multiplier.
