Swashbucklers: Blue vs. Grey is a Naval Action/RPG set during the American Civil War, during the Caribbean’s last pirate renaissance. The Union fleet blockaded the Southern ports, cutting off the Confederacy’s trading connections. In exchange, the Confederate government began issuing privateer patents, forming a powerful fleet of commercial raiders, the best example of which was the legendary captain Raphael Semmes. Furthermore, smuggling goods through the blockade became a very profitable, albeit risky, business, attracting many traders to attempt to break the siege. The main character, Abraham Gray, begins the game as the captain of a privately owned vessel but quickly becomes entangled in the story of blockade-running, military espionage, and the ultimately powerful ironclad built in Liverpool for the Confederacy. This ironclad alone could have changed the war’s course and brought the Rebel states victory. Abraham could join the Confederacy as a raider or the Union as a spy. The player is free to sail across the game’s world, from the southern coasts of the United States and Florida to Jamaica and the North Caribbean. He can trade and smuggle goods between nineteen free and blockaded ports, raid cargo ships, battle warships, ironclads, and complete Union or Confederacy quests. Apart from naval combat, Swashbucklers has intense on-foot gameplay in which Abraham slashes his way through various locations, encountering dozens of enemies and bosses. The role-playing system in the game, which is based on three main characteristics and numerous perks, allows the player to develop the main character in various ways. He can improve his naval abilities, learn new combos and shooting modes, or become the Caribbean’s best trader. Numerous upgrades are also available for the ship, such as Gatling guns, heavy weaponry, steam engines, or better sails.
