This entry in the Tales Of… series is not to be confused with Tales of Destiny II, initially titled Tales of Eternia. This Tales Of… installment is one of the few “true” sequels within the franchise, and it is directly connected to Tales of Destiny in its setting and plot. However, it was never released in the West. Eighteen years have passed since the events depicted in Tales of Destiny when this story takes place. The son of the game’s previous hero, Kyle, is fundraising for an orphanage his parents run. On his journey, he comes into contact with a potent energy source, Lens. This event changes the course of his adventure. A young woman emerges from it and explains to Kyle that she is searching for a true hero as part of a quest. Naturally, Kyle is that hero; very soon, he will have to prove it when a mysterious woman uses the power of the Lens to revert history, sending Kyle into an alternate universe in which a different side won the ancient Aeth’er Wars. This will allow Kyle to demonstrate that he is worthy of being that hero. .. The gameplay of Tales of Destiny 2 is highly similar to that of the games that came before it in the series. Most of the game is played like Japanese role-playing games (RPGs), with the player exploring towns and dungeons and engaging in random combat. The series’ signature action-based battles, played out using a side-scrolling format, are carried over into this entry; however, for the first time, a zoom feature enables a more detailed view of the action. Characters controlled by the player gain access to various skills, which can then be chained together to form combos. Combos can increase the damage dealt to an opponent and boost the experience acquired. Execution of powerful special techniques requires technical and spirit points, abbreviated as TP and SP, respectively.
