The Great Battles of Rome is a real-time strategy video game that takes place during the time of the Roman empire. You are given the opportunity to take part in each of the significant battles that occurred throughout Roman history. During the downtime between missions, you have the option of watching up to half an hour’s worth of TV footage from various History Channel documentaries on Rome. Additionally, the entire narrative of Marcus Aurelius is brought to life through the use of voice acting. The gameplay is comparable to that of Slitherine’s earlier game, Legion Arena, which includes the following: On a 3D map, you have real-time control over the forces that you command. There is no resource collecting or city building, but at the conclusion of each combat, you are awarded points that can be spent to acquire new units and upgrade surviving units that you bring along with you to the next battle.

The video game has a total of 14 distinct campaigns, each of which depicts more than one hundred distinct fights. There are twenty distinct classes of units, each of which may be personalized with a plethora of various abilities and articles of clothing.

You take control of the Celts in a series of additional missions derived from the PC version of Legion Arena: Cult of Mithras that are included in the PSP edition. The PlayStation 2 version does not contain any multiplayer modes, in contrast to the PlayStation Portable and Windows versions.
