Sega’s attempt to compete with the FIFA and Pro Evolution Soccer series is Virtua Pro Football. It’s more like those than the more arcade-oriented Virtua Striker games. Controls usually function, including short and long passes, crosses, shots, and various defense options. The game consists of a one-on-one mode in which offensive players can challenge and dribble past defenders. The camera zooms in on the dribbler from behind, and the player can use different stick and button combinations to get past the defender. Lunge, feint, and nutmeg are some of the possible movement options. Over 250 teams compete in twelve leagues in the game (including three licensed ones; Dutch Eredivisie and Gouden Gids Divisie and Spanish LFP Primera Division). The players’ options are domestic, club, international, and custom leagues and cups. The player mode, in which the player creates and develops his footballer, is more unique. Each week, the player can practice, rest, or go out. Practice is done through various mini-games; the considerable skills improve by playing these, but so does the risk of injury. As a result, rest is required at times. Going out entails interacting with different people in various settings, which is necessary to become more well-known among supporters and the general public. It is also possible to purchase items, both football and luxury. Events such as coach comments, press conferences, and contract negotiations are also part of the player mode. The game also includes a playbook mode in which the player can create his tactics for pre-defined pieces. Let’s Make A Soccer Team! Teams formed in Sega’s other football game can be imported into Virtua Pro Football.
