The gameplay of World Destruction League: Thunder Tanks, an automobile combat shooter game, is comparable to that of the Twisted Metal and Vigilante 8 series. The player must beat enemy cars and obtain “powerups,” but to win, they must also capture the enemy flags. This game is similar to Twisted Metal and Vigilante 8. Despite this, every one of the vehicles is a tank, which is where the name comes from. The actual playing time is limited, which contributes to the game’s lack of popularity among players. Also, it was one of the very first games to be made available for the PlayStation 2 console. The fact that it is developed by the same firm, 3DO, and features gameplay comparable to that of the Battletanx series makes it widely seen as a natural continuation of that franchise.
Moreover, a moto tank from Battletanx: Global Assault can be seen in the opening title sequence. Many playable tanks are either directly inspired by Battletanx or explicitly cloned from it. A reversed M-80 may also be seen in the game as the unplayable AI-controlled Skorpion Bomb Tank, only available in the version of Battletanx: Global Assault on the PlayStation 1.
