The player assumes control of Aya, a Japanese cowgirl dressed in a bikini who wields a katana and wears a scarf around her neck when playing the hack-and-slash game mode. The player faces off against legions of zombies and ghastly boss creatures, both of which gush rivers of blood when they are killed. Aya is frequently joined on her journeys by several brave women, including her younger sister Saki, who appears in most books in the series.
