It is Sonic’s birthday, and his close pals have arranged a surprise party for him in honor of the occasion. Sadly, just as the party is about to start, a strange entity materializes in the sky and takes Sonic and his buddies through bizarre interdimensional portals! Sonic and a younger version of himself find themselves at a crossroads due to the mysterious entity wreaking havoc on the time-space continuum. The two Sonics must cooperate to repair the flow of time, save his companions, and restore his history.

The long-running Sonic the Hedgehog video game franchise continues with the action-packed and fast-paced platformer Sonic Generations. As part of Sega’s commemoration of the character’s 20th anniversary, this game takes a look back at the history of the entire series by including iconic levels from each of the significant games released over the last 20 years. The game is split into three “eras,” each containing three stages. These stages come from a separate Sonic game, ranging from the very first Sonic the Hedgehog game to the most recent Sonic Colors game, including many of the highs and lows that occurred in between.

Two distinct variations, or “Acts,” are available for each stage in the game. The first act of each step is completed with classic Sonic, who possesses no special powers other than running, jumping, and dashing. Act 1 stages usually consist solely of side-scrolling platform stages, just like in the older two-dimensional games. Act 2 sets, on the other hand, are played with Modern Sonic, who lacks the spin dash but acquires the ability to home in on enemies and boost forward at exceedingly high speeds. Act 2 stages will alternate between 2D and 3D platform sections as the game advances. Both Sonics have the potential to acquire and equip a vast array of skills, such as faster stopping or different sorts of shields.

Each era features a head-to-head confrontation between Sonic and one of his adversaries, and each one concludes in a redesigned take on a traditional boss fight. When you complete a stage, you unlock many challenge stages, each focusing on a different group of supporting characters or gimmicks. In addition, there are collectible Red Star Rings hidden throughout each of the main steps. By completing tasks and collecting Red Rings, players will be rewarded with access to brand new and original music, as well as brand new and original concept art from throughout the entirety of the series’ existence.
