While the game engine was the focus of this yearly update, the Manager mode was also improved: players now enhance their playing ability by being active members of the squad, forcing the player to choose between keeping his celebrated stars near retirement in the starting eleven or giving the youth system a chance to shine. The series’ primary mode now lets players watch the game in a simplified text mode and take action to change events. Pounds, Euros, or Dollars replaced the points system. Tournaments (including custom tournaments) and Challenges are other game variants. The player can spend points in the Fanshop on new teams, a unique overhead camera, Adidas balls (including all original World Cup balls from 1974 to 2002), stadiums, third kits, and special celebrations for created players by completing challenges. Interactive Leagues were finally added to online gaming. English Premier League, French Ligue 1, German Bundesliga, and Mexican First Division are online-only leagues based on real-world fixtures. Then, online participants compete against their favorite teams, counting a win as one vote. The week’s winner gets three points and the most votes. This option allows unlimited weekly matches.
