Prince Laharl awakens from a two-year slumber to find his father, King Krichevskoy, dead and the Netherworld amid a civil war over who will take the throne. Laharl, refusing to relinquish his rightful place as the next king, joins forces with his subordinate Etna and her underlings to fight back. Disgaea is a role-playing game with a tactical twist. Battles take place on a map divided into square grids. The player commands a squad of humanoids and monsters, each occupying a single square of the grid and engaging in combat with a group of enemies. Depending on the character and attack chosen, the player will be able to deal damage to a specific enemy unit or a designated region of the map. When all enemy units or all of the player’s units are destroyed, the battle is over. Humanoid characters can lift and throw other teams across the map to allow allies to move further or to keep enemies at bay. The player can even capture enemies by throwing them into the base panel; these enemies become allies and can be used on subsequent maps. Several factors influence the likelihood of catching an enemy in this manner. If the enemy is not seen, all characters inside the base panel will die, but the enemy will live.
