In FIFA 09, the game’s physical activity is more responsive, intelligent, and realistic than ever, thanks to 500 new animation sequences and brand-new collision and shielding systems. These systems represent the most significant improvements to the game engine in the past four years. Players can use manners that aren’t with their physical characteristics thanks to an updated collision detection system that provides coverage in all 360 degrees and hundreds of new collision animations. The players’ speed, direction, and strength now determine everything that happens, from the collision’s severity to who gets possession of the ball. In addition, the shoulders, arms, and legs are all involved in contact. Stronger players can knock down weaker players or use their bodies or arms to win competitions because of their superior strength. The new shielding system adds dozens of new outcomes to the game’s challenges, and player strength and momentum are factors in determining the results of the challenges. In addition, players can shield the ball by pushing off the defender to create space, which, like in real life, carries the risk of being called for a foul. Matches now feature an additional element of strategy thanks to the enhanced control afforded by the ball shield, allowing players to adjust the game’s pace as necessary.
