The history of the Final Fantasy series begins with Final Fantasy X-2, which is the first installment of a straight sequel. The events of this game take place two years after the conclusion of Final Fantasy X, in which Yuna and her guardians destroyed Sin and brought peace back to Spira. The Yevon religion has almost entirely vanished, and two political factions have begun to compete with one another for power. These factions are the Youth League, which is led by Mevyn Nooj, and the New Yevon Party, which is led by Praetor Baralai. Both of these political groups are vying for dominance. In the meantime, Yuna’s cousin Rikku stumbles into a particular sphere that, for some unexplained reason, displays an image of Yuna’s one and only love, Tidus. Yuna receives the sphere thanks to Rikku’s efforts. Yuna, who is adamant about solving the riddle, plans a trip called “sphere-hunting” in which she will try to locate more of the mysterious spheres that are dispersed over the planet and, if she’s lucky, she’ll also find Tidus.

The ATB (active time battle) system, which was used in the game’s immediate predecessor but was replaced with turn-based combat, has been brought back for the sequel. When compared to earlier entries in the series, this game’s combat moves at a somewhat speedier pace, placing a greater focus on quick decision-making and timing. Throughout the entirety of the game, the player is only able to take control of three characters, all of which are female: Yuna, her friend Rikku, and Paine. The job system used in this game is quite similar to the one found in Final Fantasy V. Players have the opportunity to study a variety of skills and personalize their character classes. Certain areas now allow for some climbing and jumping, however only on a limited scale. The framework of the game is not as linear as it is in the vast majority of other games in the same genre. Even though there is only one path to follow through the main story, the player has the option to travel to the majority of the game’s other destinations early on, given that the airship is already accessible at that point in the game.
