Graphics in Odin Sphere are a mix of two dimensions (2D) and three dimensions (3D), and the game is a side-scrolling action role-playing game (RPG). The game was developed as a spiritual successor to Atlus’s own Princess Crown, and it features the same kind of modular animation system, which enables extremely smooth and varied motion for even the largest characters. Additionally, the game was designed as a spiritual successor to Atlus’s own Princess Crown.

The action gameplay is quite similar to that of Princess Crown, with the exception that it does not restrict confrontations with enemies to one-on-one duels; rather, all of the combat takes place in real-time as the player makes their way through several circular locations. As a reward for vanquishing foes, the player receives objects and experience points, which can be used to increase the character’s attack power and access to magical skills at higher levels. In addition, players have the ability to sow seeds during battle, which will eventually mature into fruit that may be consumed after consuming the Phozons that are released when foes are vanquished. The character can also consume photons to increase the potency of their weaponry throughout the game.

The game allows players to take control of one of five unique characters, each of whom has their own unique backstory that is woven into a larger epic saga that is mostly inspired by Richard Wagner’s The Ring of the Nibelung.
